Kurseong, April 4 – Ahead of the upcoming elections scheduled for April 22, two independent candidates, Sumendra Tamang and Mohan Sharma, have officially filed their nomination papers from the Kurseong constituency.
The nominations were submitted at the Sub-Divisional Office, bringing the total number of candidates in the constituency to five. Among others in the race are Amar Lama from Bharatiya Gorkha Prajatantrik Morcha (BGPM), Sonam Lama as a joint alliance candidate, and Bandana Rai from All India Gorkha League (AIGL).
Speaking after filing his nomination, candidate Sumendra Tamang highlighted the ongoing struggles of tea garden workers. He stated that despite years of leadership, no significant steps have been taken to improve their conditions. “Even basic issues of workers remain unresolved, and minimum wage continues to be a major concern,” he said. Tamang added that his decision to contest the election is driven by the need to bring real change and justice for laborers.
Meanwhile, Mohan Sharma reiterated his commitment to addressing unemployment among the youth. He said that winning or losing the election is secondary, and his primary focus remains on solving the problems faced by young people. “I will work actively to reduce unemployment and create opportunities for the youth,” Sharma stated confidently.
Sharma also outlined several of his proposed initiatives, including the establishment of employment facilitation centers, support systems for workers employed abroad, welfare programs for tea garden laborers, development of libraries and study centers, mental health support services, and women’s safety and domestic violence assistance programs.
He further emphasized that his campaign will adopt a modern approach, including digital campaigning methods, to connect more effectively with the public.
With multiple candidates मैदान में, the Kurseong constituency is set for a competitive electoral battle this season.
